Potato Market Update
All russet potato shipping regions are within days of concluding last year’s crop. Pricing continues to be at record high levels. Demand is steady, but not overbearing. Growers are expected to start new crop russet potatoes within the next 10 days. Overall, this year’s crop will be a bit later than normal.
Growers in Minnesota and Wisconsin started red potato harvest this week. Both regions will be in full swing by August 7.
New crop yellow potatoes are available in several shipping regions. We are experiencing normal yields with average to above average prices. Pricing is expected to come under pressure in the next couple of weeks as more areas bring new crop yellow potatoes to market.
New crop white potatoes are available in the Southeast and the West. Most of those supplies remain near their shipping points. Pricing remains stable.
Fingerling potatoes are available in a few different shipping regions , although supplies still seem somewhat limited. Pricing is slightly above average.
Onion Market Update
California and New Mexico are the main shipping areas for yellow and red onions. Demand and pricing have been excellent for growers with new crop onions this season. Medium onions are tight, with the highest demand currently.
The Columbia Basin has started with new crop transplants, with storage crops to follow next month. All reports show the crops are coming along with good quality and sizing.
Top Promotions Valued by Households
Digital Coupons are leveraged most when shopping perimeter categories (i.e., Produce, Dairy, Meat/Seafood) while threshold events and end caps are used most often when shopping center store (i.e., Shelf-stable, Drinks & Snacks & Candy).
Lower income shoppers cited digital promotions as top ways to save money, while higher-income shoppers gravitate towards threshold events.
When it comes to threshold events (i.e., Spend X, Save X), the most popular is “Spend $15, Save $5” (this is especially true for younger shoppers).
